Great content - not the best packaging - great customer care The art, the stories, and the general content of the book have been great so far, and I really enjoyed the posters + Tomb of Horrors manual that were also attached. That being said, there were some issues with the packaging for it - one of my corners of the box was notable scuffed (due to poor package handling, I'm sure), but there are also areas around the spine/back of the box were the covering material is wrinkled, etc. and is thereby discolored, which really stood out to me against the plain black. In addition, inside the box, the straps holding in the folder with the promotional material are not only incredibly flimsy, but one of mine had already come apart by the first time I opened the box up. Great material, very disappointed in the packaging.Update:One of the authors, Michael Witwer, reached out to me in the comments below to attempt to rectify the situation. I'm now in the process of getting an exchange for an undamaged copy thanks to his help, and I felt that I had to give some major points back to this purchase. Not only is such customer service to be applauded, the kindness and swiftness of his actions have really touched me on a personal level. It was great to see such customer care in the tabletop RPG industry after the roll20 reddit debacle, and it showed me not only how much care these guys have for the product they've expertly crafted (it truly is wonderful, both myself and my non-DnD-inclined friends love it), but the care they have for the consumers.Roll a constitution check to stay up and enjoy this Very excellent book! The bonus art/posters have small text bits in the corner that catalogs what the piece is and of what year, the pamphlet features many excellent ideas and nostalgic art (ending with a blurb about a certain sphere that one should avoid touching), and the book is packed with fantastic content between its beautiful cover. (I especially like the book preparing you with a nice blurb from one of our favorite of Jocks Machina, Joe M/Arkhan.) Though the front cover features a beautiful dragon design from Hydra, be sure to check out the other side for something I did not expect for an art back, but found that's what made it perfect! (Spoiler for those who may not be able to give this much cash: It was a mimic!)Whether you buy this or the standard version, you will not be disappointed. I hope you all enjoy this thick tome of knowledge and know the weight behind this fantastic franchise!Terrific book, satisfying special edition Your hands glide across the black embossed cover, its surface smooth but with the slightest tug against your skin. Brilliant gold flashes from the terrifying visage embossed on its front. Slowly, carefully, you lift up the cover to reveal the inside your beautiful special edition. Nestled smugly together with a coterie of prints and a devious convention edition of the Wizard Xagyg' Tomb of Horrors lies what you have long sought.Art & ArcanaA tome worthy of song. Of tribute. Of legend.*** *** ***This is book is a trophy piece. Covered in illustration, wickedly dense with history, and beautifully produced. Despite owning their page limit the authors managed to cram decades worth of wonder, triumph, tears, and rebirth into a single book that somehow manages to capture it all (or close enough!) Every time I wondered if they'd cover something, there it was. What about a page on how Todd Lockwood's dragons from 3rd Edition are the BEST? Two-page spread. What about the Heavy Metal line of miniatures? How about a sequence of the covers of D&D's core books through the ages? Yup. But organized unlike me.If you love D&D buy this book. If you love D&D art buy this book. If you love D&D history buy this book. If you don't, then go try out D&D and then buy this book!

The Vanishing Stair (Truly Devious) Free Pdf

ISBN: 0062338080
Title: The Vanishing Stair (Truly Devious) Pdf
Author: Maureen Johnson
Published Date: 2019-01-22
Page: 384

“In this second . . . installment, Johnson gives and she takes away: a few majormysteries are satisfying solved, but other long-standing riddles remain tantalizingly indecipherable, and several new ones come into play by the enigmatic end. Readers, hang tight: there’s one more round to come, and if the signs are right, it’ll be to die for.” (Booklist)“In this second installment of her marvelous Truly Devious series, Maureen Johnson offers thrilling suspense, sly wit, a memorable cast of characters and more pieces of her deliciously intricate puzzle.” (Buffalo News)Praise for TRULY DEVIOUS: “Jumping between past and present, Johnson’s novel is deliciously atmospheric, with a sprawling cast of complex suspects/potential victims, surprising twists, and a dash of romance. Johnson remains a master at combining jittery tension with sharp, laugh-out-loud observations.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Johnson deftly twists two mysteries together—Stevie’s investigation is interspersed with case files and recollections from the Ellington kidnapping—and the result is a suspenseful, attention-grabbing mystery with no clear solution. The versatile Johnson is no stranger to suspense, and this twisty thriller will leave plenty of readers anxious for more.” (Booklist)“The story raises more questions than answers, leaving readers hoping Johnson has another entry up her clever sleeves. A classic mystery that would make Dame Agatha proud.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Stevie Bell is a dyed-in-the-wool true-crime buff. There is a lot to love here. Fans of puzzles, boarding school stories, and true crime will tear through this book and love every minute.”  (School Library Journal)“Told in alternating chapters, Johnson’s finely tuned plot effectively employs classical mystery tropes while maintaining a thoroughly modern sensibility. Stevie’s quirky, ragtag bunch of new friends crosses sexuality and class lines, providing teen readers with a wealth of characters to connect with.” (Horn Book Magazine)“Johnson quickly sets the game afoot, skillfully introducing a Clue-like set of characters, laying out various motives, and hinting at long held secrets. There’s a delicious slow-burn element to the locked-room mystery in Stevie’s present, while the chapters on the kidnappings read like a true crime novel.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“An intricately plotted, compulsively readable novel that explores not only fascinating crimes but also the mysteries of anxiety, the creative process, contemporary fame, and so much else.” (John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars and Turtles All the Way Down )“Johnson gives and she takes away: a few major mysteries are satisfying solved, but other long-standing riddles remain tantalizingly indecipherable, and several new ones come into play . . . Readers, hang tight: there’s one more round to come, and if the signs are right, it’ll be to die for.” (Booklist) WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR SOMEONE WHO’S NEVER REALLY THERE?The Truly Devious case—an unsolved kidnapping and triple murder that rocked Ellingham Academy in 1936—has consumed Stevie Bell for years. It’s the very reason she came to the academy. But then her classmate Hayes Major was murdered, and though she identified his killer, her parents quickly pull her out of school. For her safety, they say.Stevie’s willing to do anything to get back to Ellingham, be with her friends, and solve the case. Even if it means making a deal with the despicable Senator Edward King. And when Stevie finally returns, she also returns to David: the guy she kissed, the guy she’s conflicted about at all times, and the guy who lied about his identity—Edward King’s son. But larger issues are at play. Was Hayes’s death really solved? Where did his murderer hide away to? What’s the meaning of the riddle Albert Ellingham left behind? And what, exactly, is at stake in the Truly Devious affair? The Ellingham case isn’t just a piece of history—it’s a live wire into the present. The path to the truth has more twists and turns than Stevie can imagine, and moving forward involves hurting someone she cares for. In New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson’s second novel in the Truly Devious series, someone will pay for the truth with their life.

New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller!

In New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson’s second novel in the Truly Devious series, there are more twists and turns than Stevie Bell can imagine. No answer is given freely, and someone will pay for the truth with their life.

The Truly Devious case—an unsolved kidnapping and triple murder that rocked Ellingham Academy in 1936—has consumed Stevie for years. It’s the very reason she came to the academy. But then her classmate was murdered, and her parents quickly pull her out of school. For her safety, they say. She must move past this obsession with crime.

Stevie’s willing to do anything to get back to Ellingham, be back with her friends, and solve the Truly Devious case. Even if it means making a deal with the despicable Senator Edward King. And when Stevie finally returns, she also returns to David: the guy she kissed, and the guy who lied about his identity—Edward King’s son.

But larger issues are at play. Where did the murderer hide? What’s the meaning of the riddle Albert Ellingham left behind? And what, exactly, is at stake in the Truly Devious affair? The Ellingham case isn’t just a piece of history—it’s a live wire into the present.

Praise for Book One:

“The Agatha Christie-like ecosystem pairs with lacerating contemporary wit, and alternating past and present scenes makes for a multilayered, modern detective story.” —New York Times Book Review

“Remember the first time reading Harry Potter and knowing it was special? There’s that same sense of magic in the introduction of teen Sherlock-in-training Stevie Bell.” —USA Today (four stars)

“Be still, my Agatha-Christie-loving beating heart.” —Bustle

Wonderfully Plotted and Twisty Middle of a Trilogy This is the middle part of the Truly Devious trilogy. It answers some questions and raises quite a few more. When the story begins Stevie is back home in Pittsburgh and willing to do anything to get back to Ellingham. She misses her freedom and her friends and, most of all, the chance to solve the Truly Devious case. But being willing to do anything means that she will have to take a favor from Senator Edward King, a man she despises and a man who is her new friend David's father. She agrees to keep an eye on David who is an accident ready to happen and to not tell him that her return had anything to do with his father. She comes back to a campus dealing with the loss of one student and the disappearance of another. Both of them were also residents of Minerva along with Stevie, David, Nate who gained fame for writing a book as a teenager and who is struggling with writing a second book, and Janelle who is a mechanical genius.Things seem to be working in Stevie's favor when she is hired as a research assistant to Dr. Fenton who is working on a new book about the Ellingham kidnapping case. But Fenton, as she prefers to be called, is a confusing character - alcoholic and paranoid - who claims to have new information that will help solve the case. The story also has flashbacks to 1936 when the kidnapping happened which introduce us to Francis Josephine Crane and Edward Pierce Davenport. Frankie and Eddie want to be like Bonnie and Clyde. Frankie has a fascination with explosives and crime and Eddie is a bad poet. We learn their role in the kidnapping. We also see in flashbacks more about Mr. Ellingham and a codicil to his will that was hidden by his secretary after his death. Fenton seems to have found about about the codicil and that information aids Stevie's investigation. This was a wonderfully plotted and twisty story with a mystery in the past and mysteries in the present too. I loved Stevie who deals with anxiety and has a dogged determination to solve the Ellingham case. I can't wait for the next book. I have so many questions!

The Little Seagull Handbook with Exercises (Third Edition) Pdf

Title: The Little Seagull Handbook with Exercises (Third Edition) Pdf
Author: Michal Brody
Published Date: 2017-01-01
Page: 336

Richard Bullock (Ph.D., University of Virginia) is emeritus professor of English at Wright State University, where he directed the writing programs for twenty-eight years and designed the university's writing across the curriculum program and Introduction to College Writing Workshop. In 2012, he was awarded the Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence, Wright State's highest honor. In addition to The Norton Field Guide to Writing, he is a coauthor of The Little Seagull Handbook.Michal Brody is a linguist, independent scholar, and lecturer. She was a founding faculty member of the Universidad de Oriente in Yucatán, Mexico, and teaches now at Sonoma State University and San Francisco State University. Her scholarly work centers on language pedagogy and politics in the United States and Mexico. She’s the author (with Keith Walters) of What’s Language Got to Do with It? and coauthor (with Richard Bullock and Francine Weinberg) of The Little Seagull Handbook, and the editor of the Everyone’s an Author Tumblr site and They Say / I Blog.Francine Weinberg (M.Ed, Teachers College, Columbia University) is an author and editor who has worked for more than thirty years on college and high school English textbooks. She is the author of the handbook in The Norton Field Guide to Writing and a coauthor of The Little Seagull Handbook.

The pocket-sized handbook that does the work of a full-sized handbook, now with a new section on editing the errors that matter.

Most handbooks include chapters on various general writing topics (e.g., the writing process or the elements of an argument), but few cover the specific kinds of writing students are assigned to do. The Little Seagull has chapters on reports, analyses, and all the other genres that college students are most often assigned. And because it's so small, so easy to use, and so affordable, it's proven to be a popular alternative to larger (and much more costly) handbooks. The third edition adds a new section on editing the errors that matter―and the option to include free access to InQuizitive for Writers, which provides practice in editing the same errors.

InQuizitive access code not included!!!!!! Purchased this for my daughter. She was suppose to receive an access code (required by professor) to use the InQuizitive app. Product page reads "and the option to include free access to InQuizitive for Writers, which provides practice in editing the same errors." There is NO option to select this. She has already removed shrink wrap, so according to sticker she cannot return it. No place to plug in receipt info at InQ. Have contacted InQ site to remedy the issue. It costs $15 to sign up, not much, but cryptic information on product page. Will update my review once I learn any details. See update below.Good little book but missing online subscription The product details state "The third edition adds a new section on editing the errors that matter―and the option to include free access to InQuizitive for Writers, which provides practice in editing the same errors.” but nowhere in the book or on Amazon was there the option to include the free access to InQuizitive. It’s only $15 to purchase but annoying when the book makes it seem like it’s going to be included. Kinda feel like I’ve been ripped off because of that. The book is necessary for a couple of classes but after a quick glance looks like it will be a really useful book for me.Helping to stop Corp. America's destruction of the English language! I produce corporate training for a Fortune 10 company and I use this handbook all the time! It's very common in Corporate America for commonly misused terms, punctuation, and capitalization to become normal and accepted. That's where it becomes difficult to pick out incorrect usage. If incorrect usage isn't corrected and published, it can be embarrassing.Unsure when to use a comma? Want to figure out what a semi-colon actually is? Want to tell that co-worker that their use of bold text is inappropriate and ruining a beautiful and complicated language? Buy this handbook! This handbook helps me proofread and edit materials without the shadow of a doubt!

The Library Book Download

ISBN: 1476740186
Title: The Library Book Pdf
Author: Susan Orlean
Published Date: 2018-10-16
Page: 336

“Moving . . . A constant pleasure to read . . . Everybody who loves books should check out The Library Book. . . . Orlean, a longtime New Yorker writer, has been captivating us with human stories for decades, and her latest book is a wide-ranging, deeply personal, and terrifically engaging investigation of humanity’s bulwark against oblivion: the library. . . . As a narrator, Orlean moves like fire herself, with a pyrotechnic style that smolders for a time over some ancient bibliographic tragedy, leaps to the latest technique in book restoration, and then illuminates the story of a wildly eccentric librarian. Along the way, we learn how libraries have evolved, responded to depressions and wars, and generally thrived despite a constant struggle for funds. Over the holidays, every booklover in America is going to give or get this book. . . . You can’t help but finish The Library Book and feel grateful that these marvelous places belong to us all.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post“A sheer delight. . . . Orlean has created a book as rich in insight and as varied as the treasures contained on the shelves in any local library.” —Chris Woodyard, USA Today“Exquisitely written, consistently entertaining . . . A loving tribute not just to a place or an institution but to an idea . . . What makes The Library Book so enjoyable is the sense of discovery that propels it, the buoyancy when Orlean is surprised or moved by what she finds. . . . Her depiction of the Central Library fire on April 29, 1986, is so rich with specifics that it’s like a blast of heat erupting from the page. . . . The Library Book is about the fire and the mystery of how it started—but in some ways that’s the least of it. It’s also a history of libraries, and of a particular library, as well as the personal story of Orlean and her mother, who was losing her memory to dementia while Orlean was retrieving her own memories by writing this book.” —Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times“Captivating . . . A delightful love letter to public libraries . . . In telling the story of this one library, Orlean reminds readers of the spirit of them all, their mission to welcome and equalize and inform, the wonderful depths and potential that they—and maybe all of us, as well—contain. . . . In other hands the book would have been a notebook dump, packed with random facts that weren’t germane but felt too hard-won or remarkable to omit. Orlean’s lapidary skills include both unearthing the data and carving a storyline out of the sprawl, piling up such copious and relevant details that I wondered how many mountains of research she discarded for each page of jewels.” —Rebekah Denn, Christian Science Monitor“A flitting and meandering masterpiece . . . Compelling and undeniably riveting . . . This is a joyful book, and among its many pleasures is the reader’s ability to palpate the author’s thrill as she zooms down from stratospheric viewings of history, to viscerally detailed observations of events and people, and finally to the kind of irresistibly offbeat facts that create an equally irresistible portrait of the author herself.” —J. C. Hallman, San Francisco Chronicle“Vivid . . . Compelling . . . Ms. Orlean interweaves a memoir of her life in books, a whodunit, a history of Los Angeles, and a meditation on the rise and fall and rise of civic life in the United States. . . . By turns taut and sinuous, intimate and epic, Ms. Orlean’s account evokes the rhythms of a life spent in libraries . . . bringing to life a place and an institution that represents the very best of America: capacious, chaotic, tolerant and even hopeful, with faith in mobility of every kind, even, or perhaps especially, in the face of adversity.” —Jane Kamenski, The Wall Street Journal“A lovely book . . . Susan Orlean has once again found rich material where no one else has bothered to look for it. . . . Once again, she’s demonstrated that the feelings of a writer, if that writer is sufficiently talented and her feelings sufficiently strong, can supply her own drama. You really never know how seriously interesting a subject might be until such a person takes a serious interest in it.” —Michael Lewis, New York Times Book Review“A book lover’s dream . . . This is an ambitiously researched, elegantly written book that serves as a portal into a place of history, drama, culture, and stories.” —Jeffrey Ann Goudie, Minneapolis Star Tribune“When Susan Orlean fishes for a story, she reels in a hidden world. And so the latest delightful trawl from the author of Rin Tin Tin and The Orchid Thief starts with the tale of the 1986 fire that damaged or destroyed 700,000 books in the Los Angeles Central Library. But The Library Book pans out quickly to the fractious, eccentric history of the institution and then, almost inevitably, a reflection on the past, present, and future of libraries in America. Orlean follows the narrative in all directions, juxtaposing the hunt for the library arsonist—possibly a frustrated actor—with a philosophical treatise on why and how libraries became the closest thing many of us experience to a town hall.” —Hillary Kelly, New York Magazine“Like an amble through the rooms and the stacks of a library, where something unexpected and interesting can be discovered on any page.” —Scott Simon, NPR’s Weekend Edition Susan Orlean has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1992. She is the author of seven books, including Rin Tin Tin, Saturday Night, and The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Academy Award–winning film Adaptation. She lives with her family and her animals in upstate New York and may be reached at SusanOrlean.com and Twitter.com/SusanOrlean.

A REESE WITHERSPOON x HELLO SUNSHINE BOOK CLUB PICK

A WASHINGTON POST TOP 10 BOOK OF THE YEAR * A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER and NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018

“A constant pleasure to read…Everybody who loves books should check out The Library Book.” —The Washington Post

“CAPTIVATING…DELIGHTFUL.” —Christian Science Monitor * “EXQUISITELY WRITTEN, CONSISTENTLY ENTERTAINING.” —The New York Times * “MESMERIZING…RIVETING.” —Booklist (starred review)

A dazzling love letter to a beloved institution—and an investigation into one of its greatest mysteries—from the bestselling author hailed as a “national treasure” by The Washington Post.

On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual fire alarm. As one fireman recounted, “Once that first stack got going, it was ‘Goodbye, Charlie.’” The fire was disastrous: it reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more. Investigators descended on the scene, but more than thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library—and if so, who?

Weaving her lifelong love of books and reading into an investigation of the fire, award-winning New Yorker reporter and New York Times bestselling author Susan Orlean delivers a mesmerizing and uniquely compelling book that manages to tell the broader story of libraries and librarians in a way that has never been done before.

In The Library Book, Orlean chronicles the LAPL fire and its aftermath to showcase the larger, crucial role that libraries play in our lives; delves into the evolution of libraries across the country and around the world, from their humble beginnings as a metropolitan charitable initiative to their current status as a cornerstone of national identity; brings each department of the library to vivid life through on-the-ground reporting; studies arson and attempts to burn a copy of a book herself; reflects on her own experiences in libraries; and reexamines the case of Harry Peak, the blond-haired actor long suspected of setting fire to the LAPL more than thirty years ago.

Along the way, Orlean introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters from libraries past and present—from Mary Foy, who in 1880 at eighteen years old was named the head of the Los Angeles Public Library at a time when men still dominated the role, to Dr. C.J.K. Jones, a pastor, citrus farmer, and polymath known as “The Human Encyclopedia” who roamed the library dispensing information; from Charles Lummis, a wildly eccentric journalist and adventurer who was determined to make the L.A. library one of the best in the world, to the current staff, who do heroic work every day to ensure that their institution remains a vital part of the city it serves.

Brimming with her signature wit, insight, compassion, and talent for deep research, The Library Book is Susan Orlean’s thrilling journey through the stacks that reveals how these beloved institutions provide much more than just books—and why they remain an essential part of the heart, mind, and soul of our country. It is also a master journalist’s reminder that, perhaps especially in the digital era, they are more necessary than ever.

Can we talk about Chapter 5? SPOILER ALERT. In Chapter 5, the author burns a book. In a story of a devastating fire in a library, seven hundred thousand books destroyed, librarians crying and exhausted volunteers, the author burns a book to see how it feels. What? Assuming she had editors, how was this chapter left in? I don’t understand.Didn't hold my interest Just not that interesting. I'm actually not that interested in the detailed history and personalities in the history of the Los Angeles Public Library system. The chapters jumped around in time. I found myself skimming ahead often. I gave up 2/3 of the way through in search of a more interesting read that would hold my interest. The stellar sounding blurbs from other writers are WAY overblown. I suggest checking this book out from the library rather than shelling out the buck for a dull hardback read.FALSE ADVERTISING I feel that the promos and reviews I read about this book were false advertising. I was looking for a mystery with a little library background and instead got 350+ pages of library history. The book was very boring and I would not recommend it.
