Praise for The Hellfire Club"This is a remarkably accomplished effort, especially for a first novel, very much like a Brad Meltzer thriller: energetic and mysterious, with plenty of suspense and a general feeling of evil lurking just barely behind the scenes. Tapper brings an expert's eye to the novel, too, layering it with the kind of detailed political knowledge that only someone with his first-hand experience could bring to the story. An auspicious debut."―Booklist"Fiction is as suspenseful as truth in Jake Tapper's The Hellfire Club"―Vanity Fair, What to Read in May"CNN's Jake Tapper proves he has the page-turning knack in his entertaining debut novel"―Jocelyn McClurg, USA Today"The Hellfire Club is hot summer reading"―Tampa Bay Times"The action comes fast and furious, "House of Cards" on steroids; you'll be turning pages faster than a cable channel updates its chyron. Perfect for an airplane or the beach, The Hellfire Club is a worthy distraction from the real-life news cycle Tapper presides over."―Cynthia Dickison, Minnesota Star Tribune"Insightful... Tapper takes readers back to a Washington remembered for being a time of distrust and potential future conflicts. Key historical figures interact with Tapper's fictional characters, and with his sources at the end of the novel showcasing his research, it almost feels like everything actually happened. It is fiction, however, well-written and worthwhile."―Jeff Ayers, The Associated Press"[The Hellfire Club is] both an engaging and slyly timely foray into Washington politics... incorporat(ing) shades of Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington as well as elements of contemporary toxic alliances."―Seattle Review of Books"Startlingly good...a reminder that the rarest thing of all in spy novels is a writer willing to give us a character who could exist just as easily in any kind of literary fiction."―Alexander Aciman, Tablet"[The Hellfire Club] has the best qualities of this sort of historical fiction, which include the winking perspective of the present."―Ben Smith, BuzzFeed CNN anchor and Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper joined the network in January 2013. The Lead with Jake Tapper, his one-hour weekday program, debuted in March 2013. Tapper was named host of the network's Sunday morning show, State of the Union, in June 2015. Tapper has been a widely respected reporter in the nation's capital for more than 14 years. His most recent book, The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor, debuted in the top 10 on the New York Times bestseller list.

A young Congressman stumbles on the powerful political underworld of 1950's D.C. in this "potent thriller" (David Baldacci) and New York Times bestseller from CNN correspondent Jake Tapper.

Charlie Marder is an unlikely Congressman. Thrust into office by his family ties after his predecessor died mysteriously, Charlie is struggling to navigate the dangerous waters of 1950s Washington, DC, alongside his young wife Margaret, a zoologist with ambitions of her own. Amid the swirl of glamorous and powerful political leaders and deal makers, a mysterious fatal car accident thrusts Charlie and Margaret into an underworld of backroom deals, secret societies, and a plot that could change the course of history. When Charlie discovers a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of governance, he has to fight not only for his principles and his newfound political career...but for his life.

SUCH A GREAT READ! The book is such a great read! It's exactly the right combination of politics, history and intrigue. Well-written and exciting, it doesn't disappoint. The characters are thought out and of course you'll recognize many from the McCarthy era, from Hoover to Lyndon Johnson, Nixon and the Kennedys. I can't recommend it enough!Gripping 1954 Political Thriller with Lessons for 2018 Jake Tapper’s HELLFIRE CLUB will be any political junkie’s favorite 2018 novel, and stands on par with some of Jeff Greenfield’s best AH work, given the real-life cast of characters (Joe McCarthy, Roy Cohn, JFK, LBJ, RFK, Eisenhower, Estes Kefauver, and more) featured in this D.C. thriller, set in early 1954 and focused on a New York GOP Congressman’s... learning curve... during his first term. Tapper eloquently weaves historical highlights from 1954 (McCarthy’s long-awaited decline, the House gallery shooting, the Kennedys’ closeness with McCarthy and Roy Cohn) to present a page-turner as a first-term do-gooder drives right into the brick wall of Washington’s established interests. The research here is meticulous — beyond the impressive who’s who of 1950s DC, you get a feel for an age where politicians were more highly regarded, veterans were more respected, the press was along for the ride, the ugly head of racism was right out in the open (but lobbyists were still unapologetically lobbying). Tapper weaves a compelling, suspenseful tale that — on its own — would justify inclusion in this year’s literary top-10 lists... but just under the surface (without even a shred of lecturing) is a thoughtful reminder of how little D.C. has changed in the 65 years between the height of McCarthyish and the height of Trumpism — members of the House and Senate (of both parties) were, and still are, doing whatever keeps their seats safe and their donors intact, rather than focusing on the welfare of their constituents or their political parties... and the questions of “How did this happen, and when will this end?”have been asked — and answered — before; for better or worse, the DC establishment is stronger than, and will outlast, any one person who tries to do anyting (helpful OR harmful) that doesn’t fit the plan. Not sure if that’s an optimistic or pessimistic outlook, but Jake Tapper is persuasive in teaching it without the reader even realizing school is in session, since the story itself has so much action, intrigue, and excellent pacing. I’d give this book 7 stars if Amazon had such a rating. What happened in the past is passed onto the future, only different people. I have followed Jake Tapper on CNN for years and appreciate the way he is straightforward with the daily news information that he reports and the fairness in which he reports what is going on in all the craziness that has been spinning around the Presidency of Mr. Trump. I was a history/political science high school teacher in the late 1960's. I can remember growing up in the 1950's and Mr.Clapper's book The Hellfire Club brought back memories when I was in elementary and middle school and watching our small black and white TV with my parents. McCarthy was someone a young person could not forget with his hearings and all the people he labeled "communists", ruining many. I may not have understood all the ramifications of his hearings but what he did to this country was unforgettable. Mr. Tapper's book filled in a lot of blanks about this time in history and what happened in the 1950's can be moved into the morass of 2018. Thank you, Mr. Tapper, for writing a book that makes people aware of the underside of politics, past and present. And look forward to the next chapter in this saga. And glad to hear your book is #3 on the Best Seller list!

Author: Ray Bradbury
Published Date: 2012-01-10
Page: 159

“Brilliant . . . Startling and ingenious . . . Mr. Bradbury’s account of this insane world, which bears many alarming resemblances to our own, is fascinating.” —Orville Prescott, The New York Times“A masterpiece . . . A glorious American classic everyone should read: It’s life-changing if you read it as a teen, and still stunning when you reread it as an adult.” —Alice Hoffman, The Boston Globe“The sheer lift and power of a truly original imagination exhilarates . . . His is a very great and unusual talent.” —Christopher Isherwood, Tomorrow“One of this country’s most beloved writers . . . A great storyteller, sometimes even a mythmaker, a true American classic.” —Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Ray Bradbury (1920–2012) was the author of more than three dozen books, including Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, as well as hundreds of short stories. He wrote for the theater, cinema, and TV, including the screenplay for John Huston’s Moby Dick and the Emmy Award–winning teleplay The Halloween Tree, and adapted for television sixty-five of his stories for The Ray Bradbury Theater. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, and numerous other honors.

Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden.

Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television.

When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known. He starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, the fireman has to run for his life.

If all you get out of this book is the "removal" of books from society to become more connected to our electronic devices I feel so bad for you This is a must read book!! But I will say that I have a totally different point of view to the story than what most, in fact, all the reviews and editorials I have seen. I am not a bookworm and so the idea that books are gone is not an apocalyptic idea. The book was written before the internet and the information age. It is WHY the books are burned and WHAT the books represent that should open your eyes and minds while reading this book.If all you get out of this book is the "removal" of books from society to become more connected to our electronic devices I feel so bad for you.The point of burning the books is explained. I might give just a couple of spoilers, but everyone knows the premise of 1984 and this book is similar. It is so much more than about books. It is about censorship and the people wanting it. The government has banned all printed material except for comic books, 3D pornographic magazines, "good old confessions" and trade journals. All other printed material is deemed too offensive to someone. So much in-fighting in society because everyone claiming something offends them. So to make everyone happy, the offensive materials are removed. Because of the year this was written (1953) Ray Bradbury could have not envisioned the internet. If he had, it would have been heavily censored also. In 1953 ideas and knowledge were shared through print as they had been for hundreds of years.According to the book, the people wanted the offensive materials removed. Because everyone is offended by something then everything is offensive, it must all be destroyed. For me the novel rings true about how easily people are offended by another person's ideas, thoughts, actions, beliefs. In the story those things are still allowed (they can't control what you think), but without being able to write them down ideas and thoughts die pretty fast.Ultimately the story is about freedom and not being so judgmental of others lest ye be judged. If you look around today, 11/4/2017, this story has never been more relevant. We have protests and attacks in the streets daily based on ideals and beliefs that clash with others. These clashes occur, rather than people going their separate ways and understanding that the beliefs and ideals of others are just as legitimate as their own. Some groups would rather have a scorched earth policy and destroy everything they hold dear, as long as the other side loses everything as well.

The Big Book of Serial Killers Free Pdf

ISBN: 1548119644
Title: The Big Book of Serial Killers Pdf
Author: Jack Rosewood
Published Date: 2017-06-19
Page: 416
There is little more terrifying than those who hunt, stalk and snatch their prey under the cloak of darkness. These hunters search not for animals, but for the touch, taste, and empowerment of human flesh. They are cannibals, vampires and monsters, and they walk among us.

These serial killers are not mythical beasts with horns and shaggy hair. They are people living among society, going about their day to day activities until nightfall. They are the Dennis Rader’s, the fathers, husbands, church going members of the community.

This A-Z encyclopedia of 150 serial killers is the ideal reference book. Included are the most famous true crime serial killers, like Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and Richard Ramirez, and not to mention the women who kill, such as Aileen Wuornos and Martha Rendell. There are also lesser known serial killers, covering many countries around the world, so the range is broad.

Each of the serial killer files includes information on when and how they killed the victims, the background of each killer, or the suspects in some cases such as the Zodiac killer, their trials and punishments. For some there are chilling quotes by the killers themselves. The Big Book of Serial Killers is an easy to follow collection of information on the world’s most heinous murderers.

Good read, but needs editing Interesting compilation, but numerous grammatical and syntactical errors (see chapter on Bunting, for example) -- at times, lapses in clarity or not enough info to form a cohesive description of the crimes. Still, a fascinating look at serial killers and could easily rate at least a 4 if properly edited.Excellent compilation of the essentials on a wide variety of serial killers. Jack Rosewood and Rebecca Lo have compiled the most vital data on a wide selection of serial killers of varying levels of notoriety. While none of these entries go into great depth, this volume isn't intended to be the final resource for anyone researching this subject matter. Instead, this is the single best volume for beginning one's research, in deciding which of these twisted individuals is worth the time and effort to learn more about. It's a fantastic resource, and where it errs, it errs on the side of being too brief.Exactly what I was looking for When it comes to podcasts and audiobooks I don't mind being told a narrative. It makes it more interesting to listen to on a long drive or while doing daily chores, but I found that attempting to read a long, drawn out narrative about various serial killers with every detail of their personal lives wound up boring me. Not every murderers life is interesting to me. This book, however, keeps each biography short and to the point. A few paragraphs here about their childhood, a few there about the murders, and a couple about the trial. Add on a bit of trivia such as disturbing quotes and we're on to the next. It's perfect for light reading, and if I want more details I have the entire internet to give me that, but most of the time I find the short one or two pages about a killer to be sufficient for my curiosity.I have found a couple grammatical and congruity errors, but overall an outstanding find for me. I definitely recommend it if you want the short version of most killers lives and crimes.
